What belongs in a record
Each record keeps four kinds of information separate: verified facts, an official conclusion, a family statement, and open questions. Silence in one category is never filled with an assumption.
Editorial standards & corrections
This memorial preserves names without turning uncertainty into fact. These standards apply to every historical record, modern case, public update, and correction.
Each record keeps four kinds of information separate: verified facts, an official conclusion, a family statement, and open questions. Silence in one category is never filled with an assumption.
Modern or disputed material claims normally require at least two reliable, independent sources. Official documents, medical-examiner findings, court records, and direct agency statements receive the greatest weight. Reputable reporting may confirm or support a claim; it does not become an official finding.
A case marked Awaiting Findings cannot contain a final official conclusion. A record marked Official Conclusion Issued must identify the agency, date, finding, and source. A record cannot be published without a last-verified date.
A submission may be published, returned for more documentation, held for continued review, or declined. We aim to begin review within 30 days when records are available. Active or complex cases may take longer.
Official record identifies a government, court, medical, or archival record. Confirmed by means a source independently substantiates the stated fact. Reported by attributes information to a news organization. Family statement identifies the family’s position without presenting it as an official finding. Historical research identifies established scholarship or archival documentation.
We use respectful language, avoid graphic death imagery, and seek permission for family-supplied photographs and remembrances. A family’s disagreement with an official finding is stated clearly and attributed directly.
Families, researchers, and community members may submit corrections or additional evidence at any time. Use the Submit a Name form on the memorial and begin the account with “Correction request.” The challenged material may be held while it is reviewed.
Technology may assist with discovery, organization, and monitoring. It is never treated as a source, never makes a final editorial decision, and never publishes a record without human review.
These standards are a public commitment and will evolve as the archive grows. Material changes will be dated and explained.
